Fish behavior laboratory


Fish behavior laboratory is a research building to examine the behaviors of the aquatic organisms that relate to the fishing technology research, such as the reaction of fish to the fishing gears. There are the following facilities.

This is an oval shaped experiment tank to examine the behavioral characteristics of the aquatic organisms toward the fishing gears. Dimension of tank is 15 x 8 x 2m, and water capacity is approximately 210 tons. Because of the large dimension, whole or part of actual fishing gear (e.g. unit of gillnet, bag-net of setnet etc.) can be used.
The behaviors of the fish, etc. are observed at the control room by the installed television cameras at side and upper part of water tank. In addition, water temperature can be controlled and light intensity can be programmed by the computer at the control room.

This facility can examine swimming performance and actions of aquatic organisms in the water current. Dimension of the observation area is 6 x 2 x 1.1m, and this tank can make 0.05-1.50m/sec water current. Because the swimming behavior of the aquatic organisms is influenced by the water temperature, this facility is being built so that it can control the water temperature.

There are two sea water tanks (5 tons each) to keep the aquatic organisms for the experiment. Preliminary or basic experiments are available since water temperature adjustment and light intensity can be programmed.

Three rooms are provided which can be used for the experiment, preparation for the field investigation or biological measurement, and so on in this building.
